Italy is the country most travellers name first when they start planning Europe, and it holds up. No other single country packs Roman engineering, Renaissance painting, Baroque cities and Alpine foothills into a route you can drive in a fortnight.
A country of cities that need no introduction
Rome alone can carry three days: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums and St Peter's, and the piazzas and fountains in between. Florence compresses the Renaissance into a centre you can walk across in half an hour. Venice is a city built on water, with the Grand Canal as its main street and the lagoon islands a short boat ride away. Then there is Milan, Naples with Pompeii and Vesuvius on its doorstep, the Amalfi Coast, and the five terraced villages of the Cinque Terre.
Food, art and ordinary life
Italian food is regional before it is national: risotto and polenta in the north, olive oil, tomatoes and dried pasta in the south, espresso taken standing at the bar. The pleasure of an Italian day is rarely a single monument — it is a market in the morning, a long lunch, and an evening walk through streets that have been used the same way for centuries.
How Italy fits a group itinerary
Italy runs north to south like a spine: Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples. Motorways and high-speed rail make the long hops quick, so a coach circuit can pair the headline cities with quieter countryside stays and still keep driving days sensible. One practical point shapes every plan: historic centres are largely closed to coaches, so each city day sets a drop-off and pick-up point outside the restricted zone and the group walks in.
When to go
April to June and September to October are the sweet spots: warm, bright and manageable. July and August bring real heat and heavy crowds, and the middle of August is Ferragosto, when Italians take their own holidays and some family-run restaurants and shops close for a fortnight.
Italy rewards the traveller who slows down. The best moments are rarely the ones on the postcard.
